Art in Bali and Java

Javas art from the 7th to the 15th century is called Indo-Javanese or Hindu-Buddhist, because it got influenced by the Indian religions. Being in the beginning stylistically influenced by the Indian schools of the Gupta, Pallava and Pala, strong distinct features developed from the 9th century on. Since the 16th century, Indonesian art is limited to architecture (mainly mosques), due to the prohibition of images in Islam.

Balinese art: In opposition to Java, Bali is not Islamic. That is why Balinese art keeps pre-Indo-Javanese as well as Balinese-Hindu traditions and forms until today. The sculpting and other art handicrafts are all about the Balinese type of Hinduism.
